Mother's Day, 2011

So much has changed in ten years
Mostly, how well you have grown up
Does it make any sense
That sometimes I cry at how grown up?
I feel truly blessed to be a mother
To the four of you


We didn't have much time together
On this 2011 Mother's Day
That is a statement to our lives changing
The busy-ness and independence
Yet the time together gave
INCREDIBLE pleasure


There are tears now, as I write
My tears are selfish, I admit
For I want right now,
To hold you through a night again
As I once did so long ago
When you believed ... I was your world


There is joy also, as I write
I am so proud of each one of you
ALL of you, capable of standing alone
The paths you are on
Leading to places as individual
As each of you are


This morning, I walked into work
Went to my station and was met by a young woman
17 years old ...
She took one look at me and burst into tears
I held her as she sobbed
Three years ago...she lost her mother


There was a reason,
I was chosen to work on this Mother's Day
Taking time away from you
This daughter, of another Mother
Needed someone to look up to
On this special day that honors mothers


Unbeknownst to you ... this made our gathering tonight
All the more special to me
I have made some mistakes
We have had "rough" times
But I am most thankful tonight
That YOU do not have that haunting look in your eyes


I am proud to be your mother
I am blessed to be your mother
I am strong, because I am your mother
When I feel I am failing
When I feel life's burden
I have each of you to move me on


Danny, I love you.
Shannon, I love you.
Brendan, I love.
Shane, I love you too.
Thank you for calling me Mom
I love you with all of my heart.
